As part of its efforts to strengthen cooperation and coordination with member agencies of the National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, the Kuwait Financial Intelligence Unit (KwFIU) organized a workshop entitled “Digital Currencies,” delivered by Colonel Fahad Fawzi Al-Dakhil from the Ministry of Interior. The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of developments related to virtual assets and digital currencies, while strengthening national capabilities to address the risks associated with them.
The workshop covered a range of key topics, including the fundamentals of virtual assets, the different types of digital currencies, digital platforms and wallets, and the distinctions between centralized and decentralized currencies. It also explored the various uses of virtual assets as a means of payment, trading, and investment, as well as the risks arising from their potential misuse in money laundering and terrorist financing.
In addition, the workshop reviewed Recommendation 15 of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and its latest updates, highlighting key red flag indicators associated with virtual asset transactions and best practices for analyzing suspicious transaction reports submitted by reporting entities. Participants also discussed common transaction patterns within the virtual asset ecosystem and appropriate approaches for assessing them in line with disclosure and compliance requirements.
The workshop further addressed recent developments related to virtual assets and emphasized the importance of keeping pace with the rapidly evolving landscape, thereby enhancing the capacity of specialists to analyze financial transactions and identify emerging risks.
This workshop forms part of KwFIU’s ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation with member agencies of the National Committee, promote the exchange of expertise, and build national capacities, contributing to the continued development of Kuwait’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing framework.
